Project Description

In early 2021, De Doelen presented initial plans to develop new facilities within its ground-floor spaces. The idea was to create a space in one of the retail units for radio and/or TV production. After some time refining the concept, a decision was made to create a state-of-the-art radio and podcast studio. Collaborating with KB|MF and OvB Project Realization, we began designing a modern and functional studio space.

Challenge

Building a Multifunctional Studio for Diverse Radio Needs

Since De Doelen is not itself a radio station but is providing a studio for use, the main challenge lay in creating a multifunctional studio equipped with industry-standard technology. Multiple discussions were held with potential partners, including Rijnmond, BNR, and NPO, to ensure the technological choices aligned with professional needs and standards.

Solution

Implementing Industry-Standard Technology for Flexibility and Connectivity.

The final setup incorporates widely used solutions in the Dutch radio industry. The studio’s playout system uses Omniplayer 3, and the mixing console selected is the DHD SX2/XC3. The furniture allows up to six positions, providing the flexibility to accommodate multiple guests. With Comrex audio codecs, the studio can connect globally and interface with any radio station, whether local, regional, national, or international.

Additionally, the latest Orban 5750 audio processor is used. Unique to this setup, Dante and NDI connections enable networking throughout the entire building, allowing all of De Doelen’s venues to link with the radio studio.

Results

A Modern Broadcasting Space Bridging Local Collaboration and Global Reach

The radio studio was completed in October 2024. It offers a welcoming space with large windows, inviting passersby to peek inside. This studio marks the beginning of a new collaboration between De Doelen, Rijnmond, and the Grafisch Lyceum in Rotterdam.
